Job description

About the role

Join the team behind Tellent Recruitee, our Applicant Tracking System trusted by thousands of organizations around the world to attract and hire great people. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll help evolve a product where reliability, scalability, and a great user experience matter.

You'll join Team Hire, a collaborative group of Backend and Frontend Engineers, working closely with Design, QA, and DevOps to solve complex problems at scale. We're looking for an engineer who combines strong technical skills with a product mindset: someone who asks "why?" before building, thinks about the impact on users, and helps the team find pragmatic solutions to technical challenges.

Your primary focus will be backend development in Elixir, working on both new capabilities and the modernization of our existing codebase. Whether you're already experienced with Elixir or coming from another backend technology such as Ruby on Rails, Python, Java, or PHP, you'll have the support of experienced teammates as you deepen your expertise.

Your First Year at Tellent

First 3 months: You'll get to know the team, our product, and our architecture while contributing to your first meaningful improvements. You'll become familiar with our engineering practices and ways of working, supported by experienced teammates as you get up to speed with our Elixir stack.

Within 6 months: You'll take ownership of features and contribute to technical discussions, code reviews, and improvements to the scalability, reliability, and maintainability of the platform. You'll work closely with your teammates to solve customer problems and deliver valuable product improvements.

After 1 year: You'll be a trusted technical partner within the team, taking ownership of significant parts of the product and contributing to technical decisions and architectural discussions. You'll also help share knowledge across the team through collaboration, pair programming, and mentoring.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Build and improve reliable, scalable backend solutions for Tellent Recruitee, our core Applicant Tracking System used by thousands of organizations globally.

  • Develop new capabilities while also modernizing and improving our existing codebase to increase performance, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Design and implement solutions that balance technical quality with customer and business needs.

  • Take ownership of the features you deliver, ensuring they are well-tested, maintainable, and meet our quality standards.

  • Investigate and resolve bugs and technical issues to help maintain a stable and reliable experience for our customers.

  • Participate in technical discussions and contribute to system design and architectural decisions, with support from more experienced teammates where needed.

  • Collaborate closely with Backend and Frontend Engineers, Design, QA, and DevOps to solve complex problems and deliver valuable product improvements.

  • Participate in pair programming, code reviews, and real-time problem solving to share knowledge and continuously improve how we work.

What You'll Bring

  • Commercial experience with Elixir, or strong backend development experience in technologies such as Ruby on Rails, Python, Java, or PHP combined with a strong motivation to learn Elixir.

  • Experience designing and building scalable applications and a solid understanding of databases, preferably PostgreSQL.

  • General knowledge of Elasticsearch and RabbitMQ.

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic approach to maintaining and improving existing applications.

  • A strong focus on quality and reliability, while understanding that good engineering also means making pragmatic trade-offs.

  • A product mindset: you don't simply implement specifications; you ask questions, think about the problem we're solving for users, and consider technical trade-offs.

  • A collaborative approach and willingness to participate in pair programming, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.

  • Experience with messaging systems at scale, such as transactional email or push notifications, is a plus.

  • Fluent in English; Polish is a plus.

What we offer

  • Hybrid or remote working setup across Amsterdam, the Cologne area, and Poland

  • A chance to shape one of the most ambitious scale-ups in Europe and lead a company-defining tech transition.

  • Work in a diverse, multicultural, and remote-friendly team.

  • €1,500 annual training budget + 2 dedicated learning days

  • Pension plan, travel reimbursement, and wellness perks.

  • 28 paid holiday days + 2 additional days to relax.

  • Work from anywhere for 4 weeks/year.

  • Apple MacBook and top-tier tooling.

  • €200 home office budget.

Please note: Benefits may differ based on your employment location.
